Tigzirt is the closest thing to a beach resort town on the Kabylie coast, with Roman ruins from the ancient city of Iomnium above the beach and a genuine summer tourist economy driven by Kabyle families from Tizi Ouzou and diaspora returnees from France. In July-August the beach creates a public social atmosphere unlike anything in the mountain interior — mixed groups, diaspora women who dress and interact more like their French counterparts, and a seasonal relaxation of the normal social rules. French is spoken everywhere in summer. By Algerian standards, this is as open as the Berber north gets.
