Tagdemt contains the ruins of Tahert — the capital of the Rustamid Imamate, the major Ibadite Islamic state that controlled much of the Maghreb from the 8th to 10th centuries — making it one of the genuinely historically significant sites in western Algeria. Emir Abdelkader also used the fortified position during his resistance campaigns against France in the 1840s.
