Timmimoun is built in red sandstone ksar style and overlooks a large sebkha (salt flat), which makes it the most photogenic town in Adrar province and the one with the strongest pre-existing tourism infrastructure. It hosts a well-known annual cultural festival that used to draw Algerian tourists from the north. But Algeria's overall security situation gutted the tourism trade and even at its peak, the interaction was cultural, not social — conservative Islamic town, no alcohol, no mixed social spaces, and a foreign man is an object of curiosity rather than a social participant.
