Saalekreis wraps around the south of Halle and includes Merseburg, a cathedral city tied to the giant Leuna chemical works nearby — one of the largest chemical complexes in Europe. The industrial corridor is functional but grim, and outside Merseburg the district is agricultural and low-density. There's some spillover from Halle's university scene since the districts border each other, but Saalekreis itself offers almost nothing for someone from outside. Cheap to live in if a job pulls you here; otherwise, skip it.
