The cost of living is among the lowest of any German city of its size, which gives a foreign man with even modest income real social leverage. The technical university keeps a younger demographic cycling through. It's not glamorous but the gap between effort and outcome here is better than most German cities.

Chemnitz is a post-industrial city that hasn't fully found its identity after reunification — the DDR-era housing blocks still dominate and economic insecurity runs through a lot of social interactions. The 2018 far-right demonstrations left a mark on the city's reputation that's only partially deserved; there's a genuine counter-culture scene around the Kaßberg neighborhood. Women in their 20s and early 30s are more approachable than in smaller Saxon towns but the overall social scene is thinner than Leipzig or Dresden. You can do okay here if you're planted in the right circles.

The city's economy is still catching up from deindustrialization and that financial stress permeates the social atmosphere. The dating scene is limited in size and the women who are socially active tend to be concentrated in a handful of spots that are easy to exhaust quickly. It's a tough place to build from scratch.
