Louis XIV laid this town out in 1680 as a French military fortress and you can still see the geometric Vauban street grid in the old center, which is interesting for about 45 minutes. After that it's a working-class Ford plant town where social life revolves around local connections and football clubs. Ford announced closure of its Saarlouis factory, which is bleeding economic confidence from the area. Proximity to the French border doesn't translate into any French social energy — it's still very much a closed German industrial town.
