The Technik Museum has a Space Shuttle Buran and a Boeing 747 you can walk through, which is the kind of genuinely unexpected thing that starts conversations. The city is 50,000 people on the Rhine with good rail connections to Ludwigshafen and Mannheim. For a foreign man the novelty of being the interesting outsider plays well in a city small enough to stand out.

Speyer is a manageable city with real historical substance — the Romanesque cathedral, the Salian dynasty connection, the old Jewish cemetery (one of Germany's oldest). The Technik Museum overperforms for its category. The city is Catholic in character and quieter than you'd expect for a Rhine city. Social life is limited by size and the absence of a major university, but the Munich-Nürnberg to Cologne train axis doesn't help with access. Mannheim is 25 minutes away for when you need more.

Speyer is an interesting historical city but 50,000 people with a predominantly Catholic, conservative character and no university doesn't create much social energy for an outsider. The museum and cathedral bring day-trippers who don't stay. The Rhine-plain setting means evenings in the city are quiet and the bar scene is limited. For social life you'd need to go to Mannheim or Ludwigshafen.
