Werra-Meißner-Kreis was until 1989 literally on the edge of the Iron Curtain — the Werra River formed part of the inner German border and the economic and demographic consequences of that isolation have been lasting. Eschwege is the main town and carries a proud but insular regional identity. Population has declined significantly since reunification and investment has been slow to follow. The district is working through a difficult post-border adjustment that isn't complete.

The social infrastructure for someone from outside simply does not exist. The landscape is worth a day trip from Kassel; that's the full case.
