The Rheingau strip along the Rhine between Rüdesheim and Eltville is legitimate wine country — producers like Schloss Johannisberg (in continuous operation since 1100) and Kloster Eberbach have made Rheingau Riesling a serious international category. During harvest season and the summer wine festivals, the villages fill with visitors from across Germany and Europe and the social atmosphere loosens considerably. Rüdesheim's Drosselgasse is tourist-oriented but genuinely lively. The upside is seasonal but real.

The Rheingau wine villages are deeply local and agricultural in their social structure — the social year follows the harvest calendar, and the families that produce the wine have been here for generations. Foreign visitors are welcomed warmly as customers and tourists but the social inclusion doesn't go deeper than that. The Taunus half of the district is Frankfurt commuter territory with sealed suburban social life. Interesting for a weekend during wine season; not a social base.

The Taunus commuter towns have closed suburban social cultures. The district as a whole rewards visitors temporarily and excludes them permanently. No reason to base yourself here.
