Märkisch-Oderland is the district east of Berlin that includes Strausberg — close enough to the city to have Berlin commuters but far enough to have lower costs and less of the capital's social armor. Strausberg itself has a real lake, a functioning town center, and enough young professionals that you're not in pure rural territory. The proximity to Berlin (30 minutes by S-Bahn) means you can play both environments. A foreigner here is uncommon enough to be interesting.

Märkisch-Oderland is mostly suburban and rural, with Strausberg being the only town with any real social density. East of Strausberg it gets progressively quieter and more agricultural. The district's closeness to Berlin is its main asset — without that you're just in rural Brandenburg. English gets you through with younger people near Strausberg; elsewhere, German is required.

Outside of Strausberg, Märkisch-Oderland is Brandenburg farmland and small towns with nothing targeted at a visitor. The social infrastructure is thin, the population is aging, and without German you're basically invisible in a community that doesn't need you in it.
