Schwarzwald-Baar-Kreis
6.6
High score (8-10)
Villingen-Schwenningen has a dual identity — Villingen was historically Baden, Schwenningen was Württemberg, and they were merged administratively in 1972 without anyone really wanting it. That identity tension is now a standing local joke and gives the city an unusual self-awareness. The watchmaking and clockmaking heritage is genuine (Schwenningen was one of Germany's main clock manufacturing centers) and there's a Uhrenindustriemuseum (clock industry museum) that's serious about its subject. The Black Forest is immediately accessible.
Mid score (6-8) · Your profile
The Schwarzwald-Baar county straddles the upper Black Forest and the Baar plateau — it's high country (Villingen sits at 700m) with cold winters and a conservative character shaped by both the Black Forest isolation and the industrial watchmaking history. Medical technology has replaced some of the watch industry. Functional, self-sufficient, not particularly exciting. The county's main value is outdoor access in summer.
Lower score (below 6)
Two cities that didn't want to be merged, still operating with a low-grade identity conflict 50 years later — the Schwarzwald-Baar county's social culture is accordingly somewhat turned inward. Cold winters at altitude, conservative Catholic-Protestant mix, no university of note, and a manufacturing base that hasn't attracted significant international talent. An outsider here arrives with nothing and builds toward nothing.
