The Black Forest begins immediately south, giving the city genuine outdoor access. Cheaper than Stuttgart or Karlsruhe with rail connections to both.

Pforzheim is a working industrial city that was heavily bombed in February 1945 (one of the war's most destructive single raids relative to city size) and rebuilt in functional postwar style. The jewelry industry is still real — hundreds of firms ranging from large manufacturers to individual workshops. The multicultural character is genuine and the social atmosphere is more open than the Swabian average. Not beautiful but not pretending to be.
