The Kunsthalle Mannheim is a legitimate contemporary art museum and the National Theater is one of the best regional stages in Germany (Friedrich Schiller premiered several plays here in the 1780s). Cheaper than Heidelberg (30 minutes by train) with more actual social infrastructure.
