The Kaiserstuhl volcanic hill in the western part of this county produces some of Baden's best Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris — wine festival culture here is genuine and the villages around Breisach and Ihringen are real social entry points if you're interested in that world. The French border at Breisach am Rhein is immediate, with Alsace a few minutes across the bridge, giving the Rhine-side western strip a bilingual character. The Black Forest skiing and hiking on the eastern side rounds out the outdoor offering.

Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald wraps around Freiburg without including it — you get the wine villages, the Staufen hot spring disaster town (local geothermal drilling in 2007 caused buildings to heave), and the Black Forest resort towns up toward Titisee. Staufen has genuine medieval character and a functioning wine economy. Most of the social energy that should be here gravitates to Freiburg 15-20 minutes away. It works as a residential base if you want rural character with urban access.

The closer you are to Freiburg, the more this observation doesn't apply; the further east you go, the more it does.
