The western Lake Constance shore around Friedrichshafen and Meersburg has genuine summer energy — the lake is real swimming water from June through August and the Zeppelin Museum in Friedrichshafen is one of the best technical museums in Germany. Swiss and Austrian day-trippers give the lakeside towns a more cosmopolitan feel than the inland Swabian average, and the ZF and MTU engineering workforce brings international professionals. Meersburg's wine terraces above the lake are a legitimate social setting in the warm months.

Bodenseekreis has a split personality — summer is genuinely social with lake culture, ferry crossings to the Austrian and Swiss shores, and a tourism infrastructure that keeps bars and restaurants staffed and open. Winter is grey, quiet, and the lake fog can sit for weeks. The Friedrichshafen economy runs on aerospace and automotive engineering (ZF Friedrichshafen is one of the world's largest transmission manufacturers) which provides a professional layer. Worth it from May to October; harder to recommend the rest of the year.
