The town of Havířov, built entirely in the 1950s as a model socialist city for miners, has a distinctive planned-city architecture and a real town center that functions. Havířov — one of the last purpose-built socialist cities in Europe — has a surprisingly intact center. But the coal mining wind-down has hit hard, and the district has literal structural issues: ground subsidence from mining has caused entire streets to be abandoned and demolished. The social energy reflects the economic stress directly.

This is not a place where being a foreigner carries any particular social advantage; the structural problems run too deep.
