Palmares is best known for its January festival — the Fiestas de Palmares is one of the biggest in Costa Rica, drawing hundreds of thousands over two weeks and effectively turning this small highland town into the social capital of the country for a month. Outside of festival season it's a quiet coffee-country canton, but the population has a notably festive and open-handed culture that doesn't disappear when the bulls go home. The town is compact and a foreign man with any social skill will be remembered and sought out quickly.
