Buenaventura is Colombia's biggest Pacific port and has one of the most African-influenced cultures in the country — currulao music, a distinct culinary tradition built on Pacific seafood, and a social scene that operates by its own rules. For a foreign man who can handle a rough urban environment and is drawn to Afro-Colombian culture, the social openness is real and the dollar goes very far. The city has genuine economic hardship which creates risk, but also creates situations where a foreigner with means is treated well. Go with awareness, stick to known areas, and have local contacts.
