Municipality just southwest of Pasto sitting in the direct hazard zone of Galeras volcano, the most active volcano in Colombia. Galeras activity has periodically forced evacuations of nearby villages and the government has run resettlement programs for residents living closest to it. Population around 11,000, mainly agricultural — the volcanic risk defines this place more than any social or economic factor. Not somewhere outsiders settle into.
