Villavicencio is the capital of Meta and the gateway to the Colombian Llanos — it's a proper mid-sized Colombian city of nearly 600,000 with a functioning bar and restaurant scene along the Avenida 40 party corridor, universities generating young social energy, and women who are warm in the open llanero manner rather than reserved like in Andean cities. The oil money and cattle economy mean there's real purchasing power in the population and social ambitions that a foreigner with resources can navigate comfortably. It's 90 minutes from Bogotá on the new highway, making it easy to reach. Villavicencio is where the Llanos social scene actually lives.
