Páez
8.4
High score (8-10) · Your profile
Páez is the heartland of the NASA people in central Cauca and includes the Tierradentro archaeological area (shared with Inzá). The 1994 earthquake here killed around 1,000 people and destroyed much of the territory — an event the community still references in how it understands outside intervention. The cabildo and guardia system here are extremely well-organized. A foreign man who isn't here for the Tierradentro ruins specifically has no business being in Páez.
Mid score (6-8)
The Tierradentro tombs give Páez some outside exposure through the heritage tourism that flows through Inzá, but the Páez municipality itself is less visited and more indigenous-governed. The guardia indígena here is one of the most capable and assertive in Cauca. Community events and assemblies set the social calendar. Outsiders are tolerated as tourists but not integrated.
Lower score (below 6)
Páez's strong indigenous self-governance, active guardia, history of armed group presence, and cultural boundaries make this a difficult environment for any outsider to navigate. The territory is vast, mountainous, and has historically been a FARC zone. A foreign man here without a specific institutional invitation has no standing.
