El Tambo is one of Cauca's largest municipalities by area and one of its most conflict-affected — a mountainous, largely rural territory with persistent guerrilla presence and significant coca cultivation in the Pacific-facing slopes. Road access from Popayán to much of the territory is difficult. The population is displaced repeatedly and the economy is thin. Nothing draws outside visitors here.
