Mompós (officially Santa Cruz de Mompox) is a genuine gem — a UNESCO World Heritage colonial city on an island in the Magdalena River that gets a fraction of Cartagena's tourist traffic despite being architecturally comparable. The social scene is smaller but the women here have costeño warmth and a foreign man who appreciates the colonial setting and historical significance of the town (Simón Bolívar crossed here, it was once more important than Cartagena) reads as sophisticated rather than just another beach tourist. The goldsmith tradition and Holy Week processions are world-famous among Colombians.
