Puerto Colombia is the closest beach town to Barranquilla — about 15km west along the Caribbean — and has been a weekend escape for Barranquilla's middle and upper class for over a century. The social mix on weekends is genuinely good: educated, fun, beach-mode Colombians from the city, without the full tourist-circuit crowd you get in Cartagena. El Muelle restaurant strip along the seafront is where the social scene concentrates. A foreign man who shows up with local social awareness (not a tourist posture) integrates well into the weekend beach circuit.
