Nyiragongo's main card is the volcano itself — it hosts one of the world's only permanent lava lakes and was one of the most spectacular (and accessible from Goma) volcano climbs on the continent before the 2021 eruption and subsequent M23 advance. When the region stabilizes, the volcanic tourism potential here is real for the right kind of operator. The altitude and geology also produce extraordinarily fertile agricultural land in the flanks, which drives a productive local economy in calmer periods.

Nyiragongo territory sits directly north of Goma and includes the active Nyiragongo volcano, which last erupted in May 2021, destroying parts of the city and displacing 400,000 people. The territory has been a transit zone for armed groups moving south toward Goma, and the M23 advance in January 2025 passed directly through here. In stable periods, the volcanic terrain and proximity to Goma gave it some tourism potential, but that's entirely suspended right now. The security situation makes normal activity here impossible for the foreseeable future.
