Buea's University of Buea campus creates an actual social ecosystem — educated young women, campus bars along Mile 16, and NGO workers who landed here for CDC or conservation projects. Limbe's black volcanic sand beaches pull in the region's handful of tourists and the Limbe Wildlife Centre gives you a soft excuse to be around other curious outsiders. Foreign faces get genuine interest in both towns, not the blank suspicion you'd get deeper in the region. If you have institutional cover — research, development work, something with a badge — Fako is the only place in the South West where you can build a real social life.

Fako has more going for it than anywhere else in the South West — Buea and Limbe give a foreign man real entry points, and the CDC plantation economy means there are actually employed people with disposable income and time. But the Anglophone Crisis has suppressed nightlife, ghost-town Mondays still get enforced periodically, and the infrastructure has degraded significantly since 2016. Short-term visitors without local contacts or institutional backing will feel the weight of the political situation faster than they expect.

Power cuts are near-daily, the road network has deteriorated badly, and what used to be a lively university-town scene is operating under real constraint. The beach and mountain scenery are still there but the context around them has fundamentally changed.
