Xishuangbanna (Banna) is the best-performing prefecture in Yunnan for a foreign man — the Dai Buddhist culture is historically open and warm toward outsiders, and the proximity to Laos, Thailand, and Myanmar has made cross-cultural interaction the norm rather than the exception for generations. Jinghong, the capital, has a genuine tropical nightlife scene and a Southeast Asian social vibe that stands out from the rest of China. Women here are more independent and less governed by the marriage pressure that drives behavior in Han areas. The combination of climate, culture, and social openness is hard to find anywhere else in China.
