Nujiang Lisu Autonomous Prefecture is one of the most dramatic and least-visited landscapes in China — a gorge deeper than the Grand Canyon, running along the Myanmar border with almost no tourist infrastructure. The Lisu, Nu, and Tibetan communities here have maintained real cultural independence and are genuinely curious about outsiders in a way that feels different from areas worn down by tourism. Christian missionaries reached this area in the 19th century, which means pockets of English exist unexpectedly. The remoteness creates authenticity that's rare anywhere in China.
