Nyingtri (Linzhi) is the lowest-altitude prefecture in Tibet at around 3,000m, which makes it the only place on the plateau where your body actually functions normally. The Yarlung Tsangpo Grand Canyon area and Namcha Barwa peak drive growing domestic Chinese tourism, and Bayi Town has real hotels and restaurants that cater to mainland tourists who are affluent and on leisure trips. The forested landscape — pine and rhododendron valleys — is genuinely different from the rest of Tibet and creates a social context less dominated by pilgrimage. If you're going to spend time anywhere in Tibet, Nyingtri gives you the best physical baseline to actually engage.
