Ngari
8.5
High score (8-10) · Your profile
Ngari's main draw is Mount Kailash and the kora pilgrimage circuit — one of the most sacred sites in four religions simultaneously (Tibetan Buddhism, Bon, Hinduism, Jainism). If you have real interest in high-altitude trekking and can handle the 5,000m+ passes, you'll be moving through genuinely extraordinary landscape alongside Indian Hindu pilgrims, Tibetan Buddhists, and the occasional Western adventurer. The Ali Town (Shiquanhe) administrative center is a real Chinese frontier outpost with basic infrastructure. Ngari is one of those places that genuinely filters for a specific type of person, and if you're that type, the experience is unlike anything else.
Mid score (6-8)
Ngari in far western Tibet is defined by extremity — extreme remoteness, extreme altitude averaging 4,200-5,000m, and extreme permit requirements on top of the standard Tibet Travel Permit. The people who come here are almost exclusively pilgrims doing the Kailash kora or overland adventurers who drove in from Xinjiang or Nepal. Ali Town has basic hotels and restaurants serving the administrative population and passing travelers. Social interaction happens in transit, not in any kind of established scene.
Lower score (below 6)
Ngari is among the most inaccessible places a foreigner can legally visit on earth — it requires the standard Chinese visa plus Tibet Travel Permit plus a separate Aliens' Travel Permit specifically for Ngari, and independent travel is not permitted. The combination of extreme altitude (4,200-5,000m+), weeks of travel from any real city, and a tiny population of Tibetan nomads and Chinese government workers means social opportunity is functionally zero. Mount Kailash is the reason anyone comes here, not social connection. If you're evaluating where your profile plays — this is not the calculation for Ngari.
