Turfan (Turpan) gets substantial domestic Chinese tourism because of the Flaming Mountains and the Karez irrigation system, which means the hospitality sector is better developed than most Xinjiang cities and women working in tourism have real comfort with strangers. The city is below sea level and surrounded by vineyards — the grape and raisin culture gives local commercial life an unusual flavor. Han tourists flood in from eastern China, so the social environment is more mixed and outward-facing than Xinjiang norms would suggest. More accessible than most of the region.

Turfan's tourism economy makes it more welcoming to outsiders on the surface, but most of the 'scene' caters to domestic Chinese package tours rather than independent travelers. The city is small and closes early — by 9pm the commercial strip is quiet. Uyghur culture is present and conservative outside the tourist bubble. Good for a day or two as part of a Xinjiang circuit; doesn't hold up as a base.

Outside of tour-group-facing restaurants and the grapevine pergola streets, there's nothing social happening. Security is lighter than in Kashgar or Khotan but still present. The novelty wears off fast once you've seen the ruins.
