Jade-trading culture along the Yurungkash River gives the city a distinct economic identity, and the jade market is a real point of entry into local commercial life. For a man with patience and genuine interest in Central Asian Islamic culture, Khotan rewards careful engagement in ways more tourist-trafficked places don't. Mandarin helps but locals are more likely to speak Uyghur and some Urdu.
