Kashgar's Old City is one of the most architecturally distinctive places in China — genuinely ancient mud-brick lanes and a bazaar culture that still functions the way Central Asian markets have for centuries. The city is Uyghur-majority and deeply conservative, but the large volume of domestic and foreign tourists means some hospitality-sector women have developed more comfort interacting with outsiders. If you have Central Asian language skills (Uzbek is mutually intelligible with Uyghur at a basic level) you'll access a world most foreigners never reach. Understand going in that this is a deeply religious traditional society.
