Hami (Kumul) is Xinjiang's eastern gateway, a historically significant Silk Road oasis city that has seen more outside contact than most of the region. The Han population is proportionally higher here than in western Xinjiang prefectures, which translates to a somewhat more accessible social environment. The melon-growing region's agricultural prosperity gives the city a comfortable middle-class character, and it's small enough that a foreign face genuinely stands out. Train connections east make it a reasonable stop on a longer journey.

Hami functions as the transit node between Gansu and the rest of Xinjiang — most foreigners who come through are passing on to Ürümqi or the west. The city is more Han than Uyghur in its makeup, which moderates some of the security tension found further west. Socially it's limited: one or two decent hotel bars, restaurants along the main commercial strip, not much else. Workable if you're here for business; nothing to justify a dedicated trip.
