Bayin'gholin is Xinjiang's largest prefecture by area and includes Korla, the oil industry hub that draws technical workers from across China. The petroleum economy means a higher concentration of educated, professionally-employed women than you'd expect for the region, and Korla specifically has real cafes, bars, and a working middle class. Foreign technical consultants and engineers pass through Korla, so a Western face isn't completely unheard of in the right venues. If you're in Xinjiang for work, Korla is your best base socially.

The prefecture's southern reaches around Ruoqiang are extremely isolated and have zero social value for an outsider. Don't come here expecting anything beyond the oil industry context.
