Tianjin is one of those places where being foreign still turns heads in a good way — this is not Shanghai where locals have seen it all. The city runs on a working-class directness that Tianjin is actually famous for in China; it's the birthplace of xiangsheng (crosstalk comedy) and locals pride themselves on being blunt and unpretentious, which cuts through a lot of the social performance you get in other Chinese cities. Cost of living is well below Beijing despite being a 30-minute high-speed rail ride away, so your budget goes noticeably further whether that's going out or staying in a decent part of town. If your profile has any professional or Western-education angle, the Binhai New Area and its finance crowd will treat that as legitimate currency.
