Jinzhong contains Pingyao, the Ming-dynasty walled city that was the center of China's national banking system for 400 years and is now a UNESCO site drawing real international tourist traffic — enough that guesthouses and restaurants in the old town are operated by people accustomed to foreign guests. The Jin merchant (晋商) legacy left a culture that's more commercially pragmatic and outward-facing than the coal-city norm in this province, and locals near Pingyao have absorbed enough tourist exposure to treat a foreign man as a person rather than an oddity. The old-town guesthouse scene has a genuine traveler social layer that lets you meet people in a way that's impossible in purely industrial Shanxi cities.
