Rizhao is one of the few coastal Chinese cities where green tea grows right next to beaches — the Rizhao green tea is genuinely prized and the tea culture gives the city a more health-leisure-oriented demographic than typical Shandong industrial cities. Summer season around Wanpingkou and Shanhaitian beaches pulls serious domestic tourist volume from inland Shandong and Henan, temporarily expanding the social pool with people in vacation mode. Lower-key than Qingdao and cheaper, with a more relaxed coastal character.

The beaches are legitimate and the tea culture is interesting, but outside June through August the city reverts to a mid-sized steel and port economy with limited social infrastructure for outsiders. Rizhao Steel is one of China's major producers — that's the real economy, not the beach.
