Weinan
8.3
High score (8-10) · Your profile
Weinan stretches along the Wei River east of Xi'an and is best known as the jumping-off point for Huashan — but virtually everyone passing through is doing a day trip to the mountain and not lingering in the city itself. The local economy is agricultural and light industrial, social culture is conservative Guanzhong plain, and foreign residents are essentially nonexistent. You'll get stared at and treated with curious politeness, but there's no social environment to convert that into anything. Base yourself in Xi'an and day-trip.
Mid score (6-8)
Weinan has Huashan nearby and some decent hot spring facilities, which means you'll encounter more domestic tourists than in truly off-the-beaten-path Shaanxi cities. That said, the city itself is unremarkable and has no expat scene to speak of. Locals will be friendly to a foreign face but there's no real social ecosystem to plug into. The proximity to Xi'an (an hour by high-speed rail) means there's no reason to actually stay here.
Lower score (below 6)
Weinan is an agricultural prefecture-level city east of Xi'an with cotton and wheat farming as its economic backbone — it's a local city for local people with essentially zero foreign presence. The social culture is traditional and conservative, and foreigners are rare enough that you'll be the most interesting thing people have seen without any way to capitalize on that socially. No nightlife worth mentioning, no expat community, no reason to be here unless Huashan specifically is on your list.
