Shangluo
8.5
High score (8-10) · Your profile
Shangluo is one of the most isolated prefectures in Shaanxi, hemmed in by mountains on the Shaanxi-Henan border and historically one of the poorest areas in the province. The economy runs on walnut farming, some mining, and commuter spillover from Xi'an, but socially it's extremely traditional. A foreigner here gets stared at because many locals genuinely haven't seen one in person. There's no scene, no nightlife, no expat presence, and no reason to come unless you're doing rural China specifically.
Mid score (6-8)
Shangluo has gotten some traction as a nature escape from Xi'an — the Qinling mountain scenery is real and the air is better than the city — but the social reality is a conservative small-city environment with essentially zero foreign presence. You'll get curiosity from locals but nothing to work with socially. The infrastructure for outsiders is limited to basic tourist facilities near the scenic spots. Worth a weekend from Xi'an if you want mountains, not worth basing yourself here.
Lower score (below 6)
Shangluo is a poor mountainous prefecture where foreigners are essentially nonexistent and the local culture has had no reason to develop any framework for engaging with them. Social life is hyper-local — family networks, work unit connections, village ties — in ways that are impossible to break into as an outsider. The economy is contracting in some areas and the young people who are socially mobile have mostly left for Xi'an or further. Nothing here for a foreign man trying to build a social presence.
