Yinchuan is the most accessible entry point in all of Ningxia — the university district around Xingqing and the newer Jinfeng commercial zone give you a younger, mobile Han Chinese population that's curious about foreigners in a region where they almost never appear. The novelty factor here is genuine and works in your favor, especially in the bar and restaurant strip along Xinhua Street where locals actually socialize at night. The city has enough economic development to support a real social scene, which nothing else in this autonomous region can claim. If you're going anywhere in Ningxia, this is where your time pays off.

Yinchuan is the only city in Ningxia where a foreign man has a realistic shot at a normal social life — there's a university population, some bars, and a Han Chinese district that runs separately from the heavily Hui Muslim old city quarters near Nanmen Mosque. The religious and cultural split in the city is real: the Hui third of the population keeps conservative norms around alcohol and mixed-gender socializing that limit entire neighborhoods as social venues. English is almost nonexistent outside hotel lobbies, so WeChat and basic Mandarin are your only real operating tools. The curiosity is there but the infrastructure for meeting people is thin.
