Yichun
8.5
High score (8-10) · Your profile
Yichun is one of those underrated smaller Jiangxi cities where a foreign man with Mandarin can carve out a surprisingly functional social life precisely because competition is so low — you're likely the only foreigner in town. The city has a university (Yichun University) that creates a pocket of young, bored students who find outsiders genuinely interesting. Cost of living is extremely low and the city is compact enough that you become a known quantity quickly, which in a Chinese city often works in your favor.
Mid score (6-8)
Yichun is a smaller Jiangxi prefecture with a university that keeps some young population in the city but not much else pulling for a foreign man. The social culture is conservative Jiangxi interior and the nightlife is minimal. Foreigners are rare enough to get real curiosity, but the city doesn't have the infrastructure to convert that into a social life without serious effort and Mandarin. Fine if you have a reason to be there; not worth choosing over Nanchang.
Lower score (below 6)
Yichun is one of those Jiangxi cities that exists on maps but registers as almost nothing in practice for an outsider. The prefecture is split between a small urban core and rural countryside, and the social culture is conservative interior Jiangxi with minimal international exposure. There's a small university but no expat community, no international bars, and no natural entry point for a foreign man. The novelty factor is real but there's nothing to do with it.
