Yichun
8.7
High score (8-10) · Your profile
Yichun has no real warm case. It was built as a logging city in the central Xiao Hinggan mountain range and the 1998 natural forest protection ban fundamentally ended its economic reason for existing. The city is in sustained decline and has one of the most severe youth outmigration rates in a province already losing population fast.
Mid score (6-8)
Yichun bills itself as a forest tourism destination following the logging ban, and the surrounding Xiao Hinggan mountains are genuinely scenic in summer. The city has tried to pivot to eco-tourism and has some infrastructure for it, including the Tangwanghe national park area. As a foreign man, you get high novelty in a city where outsiders are rare, and the summer tourism season brings some social energy. The limitations are severe: small total population, extreme economic contraction, limited year-round social infrastructure, and winters that shut the city down for months.
Lower score (below 6)
Yichun is a textbook case of a Chinese resource extraction city trying and struggling to reinvent itself. The logging ban removed the city's economic core and the replacement tourism economy is seasonal and insufficient. Population has dropped significantly and continues to fall, retail and commercial districts have hollowed out, and the social world is small and insular. International exposure is nearly nonexistent. There is no plausible scenario where this is a good base for a foreign man looking for a rewarding social life.
