Shenzhen is China's youngest major city by average age — built almost entirely after 1980, which means almost nobody has deep roots here and the social rigidity you feel in older Chinese cities barely exists. The tech industry (Huawei, Tencent, DJI all headquartered here) draws engineers and entrepreneurs from across China who are generally more internationally minded than average. Foreigners are common enough in Nanshan and Futian districts that you won't draw stares, and the Shekou expat zone has hosted a real bar and social scene since the 1980s. The sheer density of young, ambitious, single professionals makes this the clearest warm market in Guangdong.
