Lanzhou
8.6
Mid score (6-8)
Lanzhou is Gansu's capital and the most accessible city in the province for a foreigner — it sits on the Yellow River and has a handful of universities that create some student-age social energy. The city is the home of the original hand-pulled beef noodle (拉面) that's been copied everywhere in China, and breakfast here for 10 RMB in a street noodle shop is one of the real China experiences. Foreign presence is still minimal and the northwest conservatism is palpable, but there are bars, a small expat community of English teachers, and young locals who have more outside exposure than anywhere else in Gansu. It's the obvious base if Gansu is on your route.
