Jiayuguan
8.7
Mid score (6-8)
Jiayuguan holds the best-preserved fortress at the western end of the Ming Great Wall, and that brings a thin but real stream of Silk Road international travelers through — mostly overland backpackers and history-focused tourists. The city itself exists partly because of the giant Jiuquan Steel plant nearby, so it's equal parts monument and industrial town. Social options are thin and most locals have minimal contact with foreigners, but the traveler crowd occasionally creates some energy. If you're passing through the Hexi Corridor, this is the most interesting stop, though it's not a place to plant yourself.
