Afuá
8.1
High score (8-10) · Your profile
Afuá sits on Marajó Island with no cars — everyone moves by bicycle or boat, which gives it a completely different feel from mainland Pará. It's one of the more photogenic towns in the Amazon delta and attracts occasional Brazilian ecotourists. The novelty of a foreigner here is extreme, and that creates real social opportunity if you can handle the logistics of getting there.
Mid score (6-8)
Afuá is genuinely remote — access is by boat only — and the infrastructure is basic at best. The population is small and the economy is subsistence-level fishing and açaí. Social life is tight and community-based. Worth a visit but not a long-term base.
Lower score (below 6)
Getting to Afuá takes serious effort and the return trip is equally inconvenient. There's no grid power for most of the day, limited internet, and the social scene is essentially nonexistent for outsiders. The novelty wears off fast when logistics are this demanding.
