Mucugê is one of the most atmospheric towns in the Chapada Diamantina — a well-preserved colonial diamond mining city of 8,000 on the high plateau of the Chapada, known for its characteristic circular cemetery, the surrounding Parque Municipal das Sempre-Vivas (protected wildflowers), and access to spectacular highland walking country. The eco-tourism economy has created a genuine traveler scene with good pousadas and restaurants, and the social environment is much more open and international-minded than the surrounding agricultural interior. A foreign man here fits immediately into the adventurous traveler community.
