High score (8-10) · Your profile
Mata de São João is a municipality on the Litoral Norte northeast of Salvador containing the Praia do Forte resort village and Castelo Garcia d'Ávila, a 16th-century colonial fortress that anchors one of Bahia's most developed beach tourism zones. Praia do Forte is a car-free beach village with international hotels (the Iberostar and Eco Resort are here), international visitors, good restaurants, and a social scene that is completely accustomed to foreign men. This is one of the most consistently foreigner-friendly zones in Bahia outside Salvador proper.
Mid score (6-8)
Mata de São João's appeal is concentrated in Praia do Forte, which is an upscale and somewhat expensive resort zone that can feel insular if you're not staying at one of the major hotels. The social scene is real but dominated by resort culture.
Lower score (below 6)
Mata de São João/Praia do Forte has an upscale resort character that can be expensive and the social world is organized around the resort circuit. Outside the hotel social scene it's limited.
