Canudos
8.2
High score (8-10) · Your profile
Canudos carries enormous historical weight — it was the site of Brazil's bloodiest civil war in 1897, when 30,000 followers of the messianic leader Antônio Conselheiro were massacred by federal troops. The original town is under the Cocorobó reservoir and a museum and archaeological site draw history tourists. A foreign man who knows the history of the Canudos War can generate deep conversations here that don't happen anywhere else in Brazil.
Mid score (6-8)
Canudos is historically charged but economically modest. The tourism around the war memorial is thin. The social world is conservative and poor. Interesting for a day visit but challenging to engage beyond the historical sites.
Lower score (below 6)
Canudos is a very poor north Bahia sertão town whose main draw is historical. The community is deeply religious and conservative. Limited infrastructure for any stay beyond the museum.
